Otteriggs field is approximately 0.24 hectares of land at North Dykes, Great Salkeld, owned by the Parish Council. In October 2021, the Parish Council agreed to move forward with plans to utilise the field as a community wildlife asset. A Management Committee, consisting of Parish Councillors and Members of the public, has been set up to lead the project. The committee will report directly to the Parish Council. The Plan
Initial work will focus on extending the hedgerow, to border the entire site creating a wildlife corridor. The main body of the field itself will be seeded with wildflowers, with paths cuts through the meadow to allow public access. These will lead to a central open space, where seating will be provided. The north-east corner of the field will be planted with low level soft fruits, leaving the vista open allowing views across the Parish, whilst the south-east corner will be planted with native trees. The area has been designed to be both sustainable and low maintenance.
History
Previously open to the public, the field was fenced off in the early 21st century and subsequently let out for grazing. In October 2019, the Parish Council agreed to investigate the possibility of repurposing the field as a community wildlife asset. This was further supported by feedback received in 2020 during consultation on the Community Led Plan, and by a public consultation on the field conducted in late 2020/early 2021. The Parish Council agreed to suspend grazing on the field, and further investigate the possibility of utilising it as a community wildlife asset. To this end, an Advisory Committee was set up, to consider options for the field, and to present proposals to the Parish Council.
